When raising your children as vegans or vegetarians you may encounter a lot of opinions, even if you do not ask for them. It can help to have answers to the basic questions such as:

How do you know your children are getting enough calcium?

Obviously this only applies to vegan children and the plant world is full of rich sources of calcium, in particular, leafy green vegetables. Tofu is also a high source of calcium. However it is true that the values may be lower than the sources most associate with calcium such as cheese. It is true that parents raising their children as vegan do need to make sure that nutritional requirements are being met and this is easiest done but having a whole food diet – basically making things yourself so you know what the ingredients and nutritional values are. It is advised for vegan children to take a calcium supplement or multivitamin (check for vegan ones) to make sure you have it all covered. As you become more knowledgeable about food you will know exactly what your children are getting.
