We have a challenge for you here at Shout Vegan. If you are over the age of 61 and vegetarian or vegan and feel your brain is not shrinking and you are not losing your marbles we would like to hear from you! This is in response to an article from www.asylum.com which pokes fun at vegetarians and the flippant attitude displayed in this article just downright annoyed us!
It seems the report referred to was a study based on vitamin B12 consumption which most sensible vegetarians and vegans do make sure they get via supplementation so concluding that vegetarians brains will shrink because presumptions are made that B12 will be ignored is plain ridiculous. ‘Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products’ is usually a proud boast made by meat eaters to justify that meat eating is natural. Actually the vitamin is not found in the animal products but in the fungus that grows on it. I’ll take the supplements thanks – and by the way you can get B12 supplements from any health store and the vitamin is often found in many fortified non dairy milks and cereals. I wonder if the person that wrote the below article was a vegetarian or if their brain was just naturally small and shallow to begin with?
Here is the article from www-asylum.com
(Our happy hour fact to amaze your drinking buddies with.)
According to a new study, vegetarians and vegans are six times more likely to suffer from brain shrinkage than meat eaters.
The link was discovered after scientists at Oxford University ran memory tests, physical checks and brain scans on 107 people between the ages of 61and 87, and then retested them five years later.
Researchers speculate the loss of brain mass in vegetarians and vegans is due to a deficiency of Vitamin B12, which is found in meat, fish and eggs. This type of brain atrophy is linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and other cognitive failings.
The decision to eat meat is often attacked by veggies, but it now seems as though these kinds of affronts may just be a product of small-mindedness.
