Birth Control Pills!

logo

If you read the post on vegan contraceptive options you will know I compromised my views by using a contraceptive pill, in this case, Yasmin, to control my PMDD (Severe PMS which affects all aspects of my life). Let me say it was a big mistake and I want to warn others of the things which may happen to you (that most doctors will not tell you about) when you ‘go on the pill’. I have had severe migraines, kidney pain,

hot flushes, nightmares, sunken eyes, confusion, dizziness and pains in my shoulders and back. I will go further with my experience of bcp’s (birth control pills) as I do believe, now more than ever, that most women should not use them! I started with the pill (then Dianette) when I was 16 as my PMDD was keeping me off school each month. I had no problems whilst on them (or at least that I remember) but when I stopped taking them aged 24, I had no cycle for a year. When I finally got checked out I was found to have an ovarian cyst and a tumour, one on each ovary. I had a large operation to remove and reconstruct and was told it was unlikely I could have children. Fortunately we proved the doctors wrong 5 years later (after 5 years of trying to conceive) and now have two children. I am convinced the pill had its part to play in this. So…why was I stupid enough to go on it again? I guess my PMDD had a lot to do with it. It is awful trying to deal with PMDD as you go through some very bad times, depression, sobbing for no reason, treating people in a terrible way and feeling there is no value to anything. That is aside from the heavy and painful monthlies which often leave me unable to move. So I guess I forgot what happened previously to get some normality back!

I was only on this pill for one month and it has messed with me, big time. I hope my body recovers. I feel like I have been poisoned. I looked at the ingredients and this pill (as I imagine most) is full of E numbers, sugar and lactose. Not what a healthy vegan really wants to be popping every day.

I learnt the hard way that there are nasty things in these pills, capable of doing all sorts of things to you and my advise is research your choices well.

I am really glad I have stopped this pill also as my conscience now feels so much lighter. Now I do not have to think that I use a product of animal suffering. In the process of giving that milk product, calves are being killed so I can choose not to have a baby. How crazy and inhumane is that?

I’m very sorry that you had such a miserable experience with the pill. Yasmin specifically is known to cause issues with the kidneys due to possible raised potassium levels. Another birth control pill made by the same corporation also causes this problem.
Its possible that your lack of a cycle, cysts, tumors, pmdd, and possibly several other health issues are caused by your own hormones, and not these two pills. Having children often eases these symptoms, and you are so fortunate to have been able to conceive! I know much of what you’ve written, but some natural supplements like black cohosh and evening primrose may help. There are vegan hormone creams available in the markets here in the states. There are also a plethora of pills out there that are far less trendy than yasmin and proven safe.
    Good luck.

Yes, I know it is my own hormones that causes the PMDD yet still think it too much of a coincidence that a lot of other problems appeared directly after taking the pills. Thanks for the comments!
