I have to say this year has been the most productive of my life. As I get older I find I am able to focus more on what is important, I hope, not just to me but to those I share the planet with. When I look back on my life I many errors of judgement and there were many selfish decisions I made. I do not regret my life, it has only made me more aware of how easy it is to get wrapped up in yourself, without seeing what really matters. Since becoming a vegan in 2007, my life has become so much clearer and I know this decision had a lot to do with it. When I was able to consciously make choices about what I ate and drank I was more aware of what I was putting in my body and what effect that was having on my health. Not only did I choose not to eat flesh but I also chose to avoid other things which were poisoning my body such as excessive additives etc. That is not to say I live on salad, I am the first to admit I enjoy a good glass of red wine and potato chips a bit too often but even then I choose a vegan organic wine where I can and potato chips made with simply potatoes, salt and olive oil! I did not used to be like this at all. I guess change is inevitable when you refuse to stand still in your life.
Once a quite unfit person I now teach yoga and try and promote the vegan choice at every opportunity. This choice for me, and I would wager for many others, stripped away years of memes (programmed thoughts) and I felt free to make my own choices and to really experience free will. Never again will I simply believe what I am told without looking at it myself with an open mind, never again will I do something because others do it unless I am sure it is something I wish to engage in. Never again will I put a dead animal in my body or have to look in the eyes of a living thing knowing that I am responsible for the deaths of animals. This is the single, most liberating thing you can do as from here, all sorts of wonderful things come.
I sincerely believe that my choice to be vegan has made me a more passionate person, someone who is concerned about all things and best of all, has turned me from an insecure person who would never speak up to someone who knows she has something to say and who now goes out of her way to share this with others.
If you make any New Years resolutions this year please make it be to give vegetarianism or veganism a fair shot. You can go to Peta or the Vegan Society site and get a free one month trial pack, with advice and recipes, or you can email me at jill@shoutvegan.com with your name and address and I will get one sent to you. We are all capable of great change.
