I often find it difficult when looking for books for my children. So many books about animals show them in a farm setting and always show happy animals rather than animals who are possibly heading towards their own deaths far too soon. So this is the first in a series of short posts to offer suggestions of where to find books which talk honestly about the food industry and vegetarian/vegan ideas. At the very least, these books will not buy into the idea that animals are happy about the way they are often exploited. I also have difficulty when my kids watch the tv. All so often cookery programmes use sausages and meatballs, even cartoons show animals with human characteristics eating other animals and so on. It can be difficult explaining to children about what they or other people are eating. We have talked to Heidi, our 3 year old about meat eating. She adores animals as most children do and we have tried to build it into normal conversation that some people eat animals and some people don’t. The other day she said whilst watching an animal on the tv, ‘It’s naughty to eat animals isn’t it’. I guess we all approach this topic from different angles. We simply said ‘Yes’.
I shall await the backlash!…. Anyway, here is a link to some vegan and vegetarian books for children.
